How to Write Interesting Yearly Holiday Letters
Holiday letters are often disdained for their lack of personality and maligned for being a centerpiece for boasting rather than holiday cheer. However, it is possible to write an interesting and meaningful holiday letter, if you know what to include, and how.
Include Your Heart-felt Care for the Reader
Unfortunately, letter writing is becoming a lost art. Once, because of the limitations on communication with friends and family across the country or abroad, the letter was highly valued. Every word was well-thought and meant to be saved for posterity. It is hard to read a letter from a hundred years ago and not be moved. Since communication was difficult, and so much time transpired between letters or visits, each letter contained the most meaningful information. To make a holiday letter both interesting and meaningful, include these elements:
• Your thankfulness for the roles recipients play in your life
• Your desire to spend more time with recipients and wish to hear more of their lives
• Your love for each of them and desire that life is well for them
• The use of holiday stationery, to convey an appropriate mood
Modestly Convey Events and Accomplishments
One of the things that make holiday letters unappealing to many is that they seem to be a long list of all the things that the sender has accomplished or enjoyed in the last year. While the recipient may be glad that you did and accomplished so much, it may leave them a little deflated. A holiday letter may be a convenient way to keep everyone up to date on family achievements, using some restraint in sharing them is always best. In fact, holding back information can make the letter more compelling and give family a reason to stay in touch throughout the year. When including accomplishments, remember these tips:
• Remember that recipients have their own lives and struggles. Hearing about your raise may not bring holiday cheer to someone without a job. Instead, state how thankful you are for the provisions that have been made throughout the year, and hope the same for the reader.
• Instead listing all of the vacations and trips, choose to highlight a funny moment from one in particular.
• Do not try to cover everything
When writing holiday letters, think of them as a legacy you will leave behind. With that in mind, the letter will be filled with what is really important. Feeling bad about what you must leave out? Use it as an excuse to write again soon.
