top 5 english grammar rules
* Agreement is one of the most fundamental English grammar rules every individual must consider when learning the basics of the English language. An Agreement is a form of sentence that primarily refers to the parts of the sentence substantiating with each other. An example of an agreement is the sentence “Mike has three pieces of cupcakes and I have two”. When you’re going to work on your grammar, you must not say “Mike have three pieces of cupcakes and I has two” especially when you’re going to give emphasis on the agreement from the sentence itself.
* Tense refers to as “Time”. Tense indicates the consistency of your sentence or grammar in indicating time. Considered as one of the most effective English grammar rules to mull over, there are three basic forms of tenses used in speaking and writing which is the past, present and future tense. An example of a sentence with mixed tenses is “Tina wondered how she is going to finish writing the song in time, but Artie will help her”. The aforementioned sentence has past, present and future tense. The word “wondered” is the past while “is” is the present and “will” is the future tense. Make sure that when you’re going to use all the tenses in constructing a sentence, they will not come out as too wordy or confusing.
* One of the most important English grammar rules you must take note of is the spelling. You won’t be able to improve your grammatical skills in speaking and writing without checking the correct spelling of a particular word first. There are a wide variety of words which the “Spell Checker” in your computer’s word processing program might not properly determine the correct form for your sentence construction. Always make sure that every word you provided in your sentence is spelled correctly.
* Avoid “Run-On Sentences”. A run-on sentence is usually made of three or more sentences with only a limited style or punctuation. An example of a run-on sentence is “Me and Blair took a long walk to the museum to check out the paintings but it was closed so we just ate at the fancy restaurant until we saw Chad and Daniel and we decided to go with them to the park instead of ordering cheese pizza and soda”. Run-on sentences can be easily avoided by keeping your sentence short or direct to the point.
* You must be aware of the proper punctuations to use when constructing your sentence. The basic tip in working on your grammatical skills in writing is learning where to place your commas or semicolons correctly. You must take note that there is a big difference in using semicolons or commas when writing a sentence. Semicolons are used to take up the entire content of the sentence or paragraph. An example of a sentence using a semicolon is “The Writer’s Ultimate Code of Ethic: Avoid Plagiarism”. Commas are used to separate certain parts of words under one sentence.
