Pursuing Your Plumber Training with Passion

Times are tough, and many people are looking for either a side career to supplement their income, or entirely new profession to adopt. While some people are going to law school or med school, you don't need to pursue those conventional avenues to acquire a great job- one that pays well, has flexible hours, and great stability. Plumbing is a great profession that provides just about everything you need from a job. If you're interested in the career, you're going to need to know what sort of plumber training you'll require before beginning work.

Most people who end becoming plumbers learn their craft by enrolling in an apprenticeship program, where they work with and learn under a licensed plumber with plenty of experience. This is a great arrangement, as plumbing is largely a hands-on skill, and the best way to learn it is to simply do it under the eye of someone who knows what they are doing already. Plumber training is very involved, and requires you learn a lot of different skills.

For example, you're going to need to take courses and learn skills relating to mechanics, electricity, heating, pipefitting, welding, soldering and ventilation. In addition to those hands on skills, you're going to also need to be strong in mathematics, chemistry and measurement. Generally speaking, an apprenticeship takes up 4 or 5 years to complete, utilizing a combination of in field and classroom instruction. Classroom courses are great for teach the more abstract skills needed, like math and chemistry, as well as teaching how to run a plumbing or construction business. In field is essential for all other skills, and for building the confidence you will require to do your job whenever you are called.

Ultimately, plumber training is designed around making you as prepared as possible to do the job without supervision or assistance. By the time you are finished learning you should be able to easily talk intelligently about the different ways you can put together different pipe joints. You will be able to discuss at length the way to lay out, support and test different pipe system. You will be able to explain all the most important maintenance procedures for all sorts of plumbing fixtures, tanks and pumps- as well as the basics when it comes to refrigerators and other relevant appliances. You will be proficient at welding and cutting, with using a variety of tools and techniques. Finally, you'll be able to easily identify all the different components and steps involved in essential house systems- including heating, air conditioning and refrigeration.

It sounds like a lot, and it is. Nobody ever said that plumber training was going to be simple and easy, though it is rewarding. Plumbers have some of the best prospects after graduation for entering the job market. Companies employ a lot of plumbers for a wide variety of jobs, and plumbers can expect to earn some of the highest salaries in construction. If you're interested but unsure, begin your plumber training with some light, basic courses and get a feel for it. If you decide it's the field for you, then go ahead and contact your local union about starting an apprenticeship.
