Mistakes To Avoid When Making A Career Transition
You want to change your career because you cannot stand it anymore but have you ever wondered how you ended up choosing it? Did you choose it because you loved it or you chose it to please others? Is it the money that attracted you? Making a career transition is not as easy as it sounds mainly because it comes with so many possible results and consequences. There are some common mistakes that a number of people succumb to when making this transition. Some of these mistakes have been outlined below so that you can avoid them.
Switching without having a proper plan: Do not dare change your career without having a detailed plan in mind (this includes finances, strategy, the training that will be required among others). Even with strategy, a successful change can take a while before its results become visible. Without a proper plan, you will aimlessly drift around on a loose end.
Outside pressure: Nobody (be it your parents or spouse), should pressure you into taking a certain career path. It is you who will live with the consequences of that choice on a daily basis. If you change your career because you let others pressure you, you might find out that you hate your new career, along with the person who pressured you into changing.
Switching without considering all the possibilities: You should carefully examine all the options and possibilities available. This should be inclusive of fields that you had never ever considered. You may come to find out that your dream career lies in one such field, one to which you have never been exposed. Schedule a meeting with a career professional who will not only act as your guide, but also as your mentor. This is because you need to gather as much information as you can, to better your chances of having a successful transition.
Outdated job skills: If you have been out of the job market for a while, the first thing you need to do is to polish your skills. If you do not have the necessary skills required for the field that you want to get into, then what is the use of doing all that research?
When you want to change your career, get to know about your likes and dislikes by conducting a SWOT analysis. One thing you ought to know is that a career should not control you; you are the one supposed to control it.
