Important points for Business Owners before hiring Project Managers and Consultants

If you are a business owner who is in search of a project manager or a project management consultant, there are some points that you must keep in mind. They would help you maintain good rapport with the person you employ. Generally, business clients who own medium or large-sized companies, look for a project manager who works as a full time employee. However, they do not fully comprehend the advantage of having an experienced, qualified and trained professional working for them. It is one thing to place a costly project in a consultant's hand and entirely another thing to assign the project to a project manager who has already been in identical work-conditions.

To have a project manager on your team is to have a person who knows his/her business. They would lend credibility by representing your business. They also ensure that specific standards are maintained. They would chart out multiple options before each project for the client to make sure that the project is completed successfully. A project manager's position has much responsibility and some authority too. If you are the owner, you can always dictate what happens in your company. However, if you listen to a project manager, he/she would have valuable suggestions to make.

There are some basic guidelines that you and your project manager must agree upon before a project. To start with, have an accurate report drawn about your business requirements. A project manager does this before a project starts. The support of owner of the business is priceless in this regard. Many projects have failed in the past because of lack of coordination between the client and the project manager. Make sure you do it right even from the time you set out.

Always remember that as a team you and your project manager would have multiple perspectives on the same issue. Whenever your project manager offers an input, listen carefully and consider if it can be incorporated into your own opinions. If your manager warns of a risk, it is best to heed the advice, because they know what they are talking about. Ask the project manager to come up with a plan. Planning is more difficult than execution, as it needs vision to see exactly how it would be on the field. Hasty planning would lead to disastrous implementation of the plan.

Do you want a project manager as a consultant or a full time employee? In both cases, hire a person who is willing to take up new challenges and is willing to learn. With client's support, a project manager can turn the project into a marvel.

It is common for a project budget to exceed its limit. It can be caused due to many unforeseen circumstances. However, as a client, you must remain loyal to your project and stick through till the end. Remember that, even if you are the one who is investing, your project manager is working for the same desired end as you. Take your share and do not abandon your project manager with the project load.
