The Most Fuel Efficient Cars of Spring 2011

Fuel efficiency is the buzzword in the increasingly competitive auto industry, and companies that can’t produce green vehicles will simply lag behind. As such, 2011 is an especially crucial year, as several auto companies, new and old, will take a stab at producing the most fuel efficient cars. Another development? The most fuel efficient cars of Spring 2011 are also among the silent and strong performers on and off the road.

One of the most awaited new cars is the Nissan Leaf. With a design similar to the Nissan Murano, the Nissan Leaf has won several accolades well before its release, including the 2011 World Car of the Year from the World Car Awards (New York) and European Car of the Year 2011 (Paris). It also topped the Washington List of Fuel-Efficient Cars, which is hardly a surprise as it has managed to bag almost every award. The breakthrough engine system of the Nissan Leaf is highly responsible for all the awards and raves. It has the capacity to run for 100 miles for every charge, requiring only a quick recharge of 30 minutes. Its engine has a top speed of 90 miles per hour. It is also a zero-emission car, which is as good as any fuel efficient car can get.

Although the Nissan Leaf will be available in car dealerships in the fall, buyers can pre-order starting this fall, specifically April. In fact, it is already available this spring in some places in the US. Its price in Canada is expected to be higher than in the US. Although more expensive, Nissan Leaf units in Canada will come in a custom “cold weather package”, built to withstand cold weather and equipped with a complex heating system. This spring, several events featuring the Nissan Leaf are going to be held throughout Canada, including the Montreal Ride and Drive, the Georgian College Autoshow, Green Living Show, and Our Greener Side Celebration.

Another one of the most fuel efficient cars this Spring 2011 is the 2011 Chevrolet Volt, to be released in Canada this coming July. The Chevy Volt has received rave reviews as well, with its ability to accelerate from 0 to 60 in about 9 seconds and its top speed of 100 mph. Inside, it can comfortably seat four people with plenty of leg-room and shoulder space for each. The rear seats can also be completely folded to reveal a surprisingly large cabin space.

In terms of engine performance, the Chevy Volt has a 1.4-liter four-cylinder gas engine, an 111kw traction motor, and a 55kw electric generator. Yes, all three provide power to the Volt, with a top speed of 100 mph when it’s running on electricity. Once the battery cells run out, the gas engine will kick in.

Both the Volt and the Leaf have made the season a lot more exciting. Even auto glass repair companies are joining the frenzy over hybrid vehicles and fuel efficient cars; you can expect any windshield replacement of your hybrid vehicle to be expertly executed.
